Open International of Boules & Petanque

aFrom March 24 to 28, the Tunisian federation of bowls and petanque organizes the 1st edition of the African Women's Petanque Championship at the Espace Tunis City in Ariana. Nearly 70 athletes from 16 countries will take part in this event: Algeria, Benin, Cameroon, Chad, Congo, Côte d'Ivoire, Djibouti, Guinea, Mauritius, Madagascar, Mali, Mauritania, Morocco, Niger, Senegal, Senegal, Tunisia. The first games will start this Monday, March 25 at 9:00 am.

As a follow-up, Tunis will also host, from 28 to 31 March 2019, the 2nd edition of the International Open of bowls and petanque, an essential event in which athletes from 12 countries (Germany, Belgium, France, Monaco, Mali, Morocco, Madagascar, Spain, France, Benin, Algeria and Tunisia) will take part.
These two competitions will be held in the presence of the President of the International Petanque Federation, Claude Azema, the President of the International Federation of Bocce, Fréderic Ruis, and the President of the African Confederation of Bocce Sports, Idrissou Ibrahima.
These events are favourable to the media coverage of a discipline that is still unknown to the general public and is subject to budgetary restrictions, despite the good results of the Tunisian selection, which distinguished itself in particular at the 2018 World Petanque Championship, winning the bronze medal.
As resources are particularly limited, the federation is working to integrate petanque into school sports programmes to attract female players to a sport that is still predominantly male. A long term work, while petanque was not retained among the sports represented at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
A source of recognition, Tunisian petanque has shone on the international scene for many years. Already in 1983, Tunisia had won the world championship, defeating Belgium. Bis repeated in 1986, 1997, 2011, and 2017 in a mixed doublette.
